Harris County, Texas, holds a significant place in the history of the state and the United States. Located in the southeastern part of Texas, Harris County is one of the most populous counties in the country and is home to Houston, the largest city in the state.

Before European settlers arrived, the area that is now Harris County was primarily inhabited by indigenous peoples like the Karankawa and Atakapa tribes. These tribes lived along the bays and rivers, and they were primarily hunters and gatherers.

The area’s modern history began in the early 19th century with the arrival of Spanish explorers. However, it was only after Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821 that the region opened up for more extensive settlement. Anglo-American colonization in Texas began with Stephen F. Austin’s “Old Three Hundred,” who were some of the first to receive land grants in the state. Parts of what is now Harris County were included in these original land grants.

In 1836, Texas declared its independence from Mexico, leading to the Texas Revolution. Harris County was originally named Harrisburg County after John Richardson Harris, who founded the town of Harrisburg in 1826. The county played a role in the revolution; it was near the San Jacinto River where General Sam Houston and his troops defeated the Mexican Army, effectively securing Texas independence. This event was so pivotal that Harris County is sometimes called the “birthplace of Texas.”

In 1837, the county was formally established, and Houston was founded, serving as the capital of the Republic of Texas for two years. The town was named in honor of General Sam Houston, who played a crucial role in the Texas Revolution.

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw Harris County transform due to several key developments. The completion of the Houston Ship Channel in 1914 was a game-changer for the county’s economy. It turned Houston into a significant port city, fostering trade and the growth of related industries. Around the same time, oil was discovered in Texas, leading to an economic boom. Houston became a center for the oil and gas industry, attracting companies and workers from around the country.
